Pirates, Cowboys and Aliens

Pirates, Cowboys and Aliens: A Whirlwind Adventure of Imagination and Heart

What do a rake-wielding nine-year-old, a reluctant teenage boy, and a forgotten playground have in common?

They’re all at the centre of Pirates, Cowboys and Aliens, the brilliantly chaotic and deeply moving new play coming to the Wintergarden Theatre, Bundaberg on August 26th and 27th, as part of its regional tour hosted by BridgeWorx.

Set in a small country town not unlike our own, Pirates, Cowboys and Aliens by Sofia Abbey invites audiences into a world where cubbies are kingdoms, playgrounds are galaxies, and friendships are forged with sticks, cardboard, and fierce loyalty. When fifteen-year-old Kieran is forced to write about childhood memories for a school assignment, he’s drawn into the wild, imaginative world of Jude - a fearless nine-year-old who’s not ready to let go of the magic that once defined her world.

With the local playground marked for demolition, the pair embarks on a mission fuelled by imagination, nostalgia, and sheer determination. What unfolds is a story full of pirate sword fights, alien landings, and cowboy standoffs - but also tender reflections on grief, growing up, and the unexpected power of connection.

This isn’t just a play, it’s a love letter to childhood, to resilience, and to the spaces where wonder is born. With authentic regional voices, laugh-out-loud moments, and scenes that will stir even the most grown-up of hearts, Pirates, Cowboys and Aliens is the kind of theatre that reminds us why stories from the regions matter.

Produced by Perseverance Street Theatre Company, this new work is touring Queensland through JUTE Theatre Company’s DARTS initiative, proudly supported by Arts Queensland, Creative Australia, and the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance.

At BridgeWorx, we believe in the power of theatre to connect communities and celebrate stories that rise from our regions, voices like Sofia Abbey’s and companies like Perseverance Street Theatre, who are championing original stories from regional Australia.

Don’t miss your chance to experience this joyful, imaginative, and thought-provoking show right here in Bundaberg. Bring the kids, bring your inner child, and prepare for a theatre adventure where anything still feels possible.
